Rides and Attractions Guide

Sensory Issues: A significant issue for most of our children’s experience at the Parks is the sensory input they receive. If your child craves pressure, (s)he may love the more intense roller coasters that provide significant G-forces.  If they are afraid of the dark, they probably will not like Space Mountain. If they enjoy spinning, the TeaCups, Men In Black and Toy Story Mania may be their favorite rides. It really does depend on the individual. Below is a link to each theme park's description of their attractions and rides. We also provide additional information that may help you along with other tips for the attractions. We will be updating this information frequently so please check back often.

Magic Kingdom Rides and Attractions

Magic Kingdom's attraction descriptions.

Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom: Electronic scavenger hunt game that takes you all over the Magic Kingdom. Enjoyable for the entire family. Defeat Disney villains by casting spell cards at each kiosk. Spell cards have also become highly collectible items. Sign up to participate and receive your spell cards and training at the firehouse on Main street (no additional cost).
The Magic Carpets of Aladdin: This ride goes up in the air, similar to Dumbo and the rider can adjust the height of the vehicle.
Jungle Cruise: Some gunshot sounds during the ride. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dark with some gun and cannon sounds. During the ride, your boat falls down a small hill when it is completely dark which may be unsettling for some. There are some sudden water explosions representing cannon balls hitting the water.
Splash Mountain: You will ride in a log on water, usually 2 persons per seat, and 8 persons per log. You may get wet on this ride. There is a lot of visual stimulation throughout the ride and upbeat music. You will descend several smaller hills during the ride while the largest plummet takes place outside and is approximately a 52 foot drop.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: During the ride, the roller coaster very loudly “clacks” up hills.
Country Bear Jamboree: Animatronic bears show with music. Audience members may participate by clapping along.
Haunted Mansion:  If you use the GAP to enter this attraction, you can ask to bypass the elevator section where the room goes completely dark. You will be taken directly to the doom buggy (ride car) entrance line. To enter and exit the doom buggy, you have to walk on a moving sidewalk (if someone in your party cannot do this, be sure to notify a cast member prior to entering the attraction). Most of the ride is dimly lit. During the ride, your doom buggy will go backwards downhill which may be unsettling for some. The ghosts and ghouls will scream during parts of the ride.  In the graveyard, some ghouls will pop up out of the graves frightening some.
Prince Charming Regal Carrousel: Temporarily Closed 5/28/2013- 6/10/2013 Carrousel with moving and non-moving characters to ride.
Mickey’s PhilharMagic: This is one of our favorite attractions at the Magic Kingdom. If you use the GAP, you will be seated in the last row of the theater. You watch a movie wearing 3D glasses.  There are frequent “4D” experiences throughout the show (spraying water, smelling apple pie, etc.) and at the end, Donald Duck is “shot” out of a tuba and ends up in the wall at the back of the theater. The “bang” when he crashes into the wall may scare some.
Peter Pan’s Flight:  Dark ride with the ride car “flying” above the ground.
It’s a Small World: There is a separate entrance for those with a GAP/mobility issues. However, the wait time in this line can be much longer than the wait time in the regular line due to the limited number of boats that will accommodate wheelchairs. It really depends on how crowded it is and how many people are in the GAP line in front of you that will need a boat that accommodates wheelchairs.
Enchanted Tales with Belle: A unique experience where guests of all ages can act out a play and meet Belle. There are several staging areas designed to entertain guests and set the theme for the attraction. May be difficult for those who have extreme transition issues or those who have difficulty waiting for longer than 15-20 minutes in each section.
Under the Sea Journey of the Little Mermaid: To enter and exit the ride’s vehicle, you have to walk on a moving sidewalk (if someone in your party can not do this, be sure to notify a cast member prior to entering the attraction). You ride in a vehicle shaped like a shell. At one point, your vehicle will go down a very slight incline backwards (not as steep or as long as Haunted Mansion). Visually stimulating and music plays throughout the ride. One section features Ursula and may be scary for some.
Casey Jr. Splash 'N' Soak Station: Water play area themed to the train from Dumbo. Children may be yelling and screaming and running in this area.
Dumbo: This ride has expanded and there are two Dumbo rides. The regular queue for Dumbo is inside a circus tent and as you enter, you will be given a pager that buzzes you when it is your time to ride the ride. While you wait, riders can play in the circus tent. FYI if you use a fastpass or GAP to ride Dumbo, you will not queue through the circus tent.
The Barnstormer: Kid roller coaster that has a few dips and sharp angled turns. The queue is partially shaded but it can be uncomfortable in the summer.
The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh: Thunder sounds, and dark in places. Your honey pot (ride car) will also “bounce” up and down in part of the ride which may be unsettling to some.
Mad Tea Party: Temporarily closed until May 22, 2013. spinning teacups.  You can control the amount of spinning.
Tomorrowland Speedway: Use the GAP at the exit for this ride, especially if there will be a long wait.  The car engines are very loud.
Space Mountain: You will be in the dark the entire time you ride this coaster, so you won’t know which way your car is heading. The coaster, although fun for most, rides very rough.
Tomorrowland Transit Authority People Mover: This is a very calm ride and a good one where you can sit and relax for a few minutes or wait while other members of your party ride Space Mountain.  However, one part of the ride goes through Space Mountain and it will be completely dark and you will hear the screams of the people riding Space Mountain. If the dark frightens your special needs family member, you may want to turn on your cell phone during this part for the light it emits.
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin: To enter and exit the car, you have to walk on a moving sidewalk. If someone in your party cannot do this, be sure to notify a cast member prior to entering the attraction. This ride automatically spins around a few times and you can spin more frequently by using the joystick in the center of the panel.
Stitch’s Great Escape: You must wear a harness that comes down over your head and rests on your shoulders. The ride is dark at times, very loud, and your seat will move occasionally. There are also “4D” experiences including smoke/fog, water sprayed from Stitch spitting and smells from Stitch’s burps.
Monster, Inc. Laugh Floor: Entertaining show aimed at children, but the corny jokes are fun for adults.  Audience participation is encouraged and there may be loud clapping and yelling at times.
Carousel of Progress: Temporarily closed 5/13/2013-5/15/2013 Animatronic show depicting the progress of technology in the home from the early 20th century. The audience area rotates between scenes while a "catchy" song and music is repeated frequently. Great attraction to cool off and rest your feet.

Epcot Rides and Attractions

Future World:
Spaceship Earth:
To enter and exit the ride car, you have to walk on a moving sidewalk. If someone in your party cannot do this, be sure to notify a cast member prior to entering the attraction. After your car reaches the top of the building, it will turn around and go down backwards at an angled decline. During this part of the ride, you will answer questions on the touch screen in your car.
Ellen’s Energy Adventure: The dinosaurs in this ride can be loud.
The Seas with Nemo & Friends: To enter and exit the ride car, you have to walk on a moving sidewalk. If someone in your party cannot do this, be sure to notify a cast member prior to entering the attraction.
Soarin': This is an awesome ride unless you are afraid of heights. You will be lifted up into the air as high as 40 feet and your feet will dangle the entire time. You feel like you are on a hang glider and sway from side to side and front to back. At the end of the movie, the fireworks display bangs and your seat will jerk suddenly. After the movie is over, the room will go dark and your chair will move quickly backwards and down to the loading platform.
Mission SPACE: You can choose either a more (orange) or less (green) intensive ride. G-forces are much stronger on the more intensive version. During either experience, you will be in a space capsule with a shoulder harness that lowers over your head and you have to wear the harness the entire ride. This ride is not recommended for those who cannot tolerate being in small, enclosed spaces. Your seat and the space capsule will move, simulating your ride to Mars. The capsule will get completely dark for a short time during the ride.  An alarm will sound after the capsule goes dark, which can startle some. NOTE: When the ride ends, the harness will quickly go up and has flipped our eyeglasses off our face.
Test Track: A new feature of this refurbished attraction is you can design your own vehicle. The car (without a roof) goes through a series of tests including brakes and acceleration and at the end your car will leave the building and speed around the track. Because there is no roof on your car, it will be very windy and loud and exhilarating. Parts of this ride are in very dim lighting.
Innoventions East & West:  Various experiences including but not limited to recycling, fire prevention, simulating being in a tornado and making an “action” movie you can email to yourself. The tornado simulator could be upsetting to those who are afraid of storms. Make sure you understand what each attraction does before experiencing them.

World Showcase:
Phineas & Ferb: Agent P's World Showcase Adventure: This is a fun electronic scavenger hunt game your child can participate in to help make their day at Epcot in the World Showcase more enjoyable and to enable them to see most of the World Showcase's attractions.
Mexico: Grand Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros: Similar to It’s a Small World boat ride but with not-so-redundant music.
Norway: Maelstrom:  Parts of this ride are in the dark.
China: Reflections of China:  360 degree movie without any seating.
France: Impressions de France:   Large screen movie with comfortable seating.
Canada: O Canada! 360 degree movie without any seating.

Hollywood Studios Rides and Attractions

The Great Movie Ride: Loud music and some flashing lights, guns firing during a shoot-out and a villain (cowboy or gangster) will board your car and ride for several scenes, which may be frightening to some. Thanks to Nicole for her help with this ride.
The American Idol Experience: Talent show just like the television show where the crowd is encouraged to cheer for the contestants.
Indiana Jones Epic Stunt Spectacular: Outdoor stunt show with loud gunfire and explosions.
Star Tours: 3-D movie simulator ride. You wear 3D glasses and your seat will move in every direction.
Muppet Vision 3D: You wear 3D glasses and some moments are in the dark. There is some cannon fire and fireworks explosions on the screen.
Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt Show: Outdoor stunt show including gunfire, loud engine and car stunts and explosive fire effects.
Studio Backlot Tour: During part of the tram tour, you are exposed to a large fire and the tram will rock at times. If the Lights, Motors, Action! Extreme Stunt show is going on while you are on this tour, you will hear the sounds from the show (as described above).
Toy Story Midway Mania: You wear 3D glasses, ride in two-person cars which spin and stop suddenly while shooting at 3D targets. Water may lightly spray your face. Even if you use the GAP pass or fastpass, you may still have to wait up to 30 minutes or longer for the queue to reach the attraction loading zone. Ride this attraction first thing in the morning after the park opens in order to avoid long wait times.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster: Music plays loudly at your head while riding this rollercoaster. The coaster starts out from 0 to 60 mph in less than 3 seconds, so you are catapulted at the beginning, which can be frightening. Bright flashes will occur when your picture is taken before you enter the first loop.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror: The pre-ride movie room will go completely dark, thunder will be heard and there will be simulated lightning. Afterwards, you walk to the elevators. The elevator free-falls and goes back up in various patterns. At the peak of the elevator going up, you will experience weightlessness. Most of the ride is in the dark. Other passengers will typically scream during this ride.

Animal Kingdom Rides and Attractions

Picture

It’s Tough to be a Bug:
You wear 3D glasses during the show. The show is very loud and in complete darkness at times. Fog descends on the audience along with the feeling that things are crawling over your feet and bumping your bottom. Spiders drop from the ceiling. Small children are usually very frightened and will be crying and screaming during the show.
Festival of the Lion King: Outstanding performance show with some loud music and lots of visual stimuli.
Kilimanjaro Safaris:  Very bumpy and jerky ride in an outdoor open vehicle where you can see all types of African animals.
Kali River Rapids: You will get either wet or very soaked on this ride. You may want to change into sandals or flip-flops so your walking shoes and socks don't get wet.  Many people wear ponchos during this ride and while they still get wet, they are usually not soaked. We put our backpack in a kitchen trash bag to help protect the backpack if it cannot fit in the covered center storage area of the raft.
Expedition Everest: Intense roller coaster. You will be in the dark and portions of the ride will be going backwards downhill with significant g-forces. Note, in the Fastpass line after you walk through the first building, there are people waiting outside the ride for family members. You may experience crying/loud babies walking through this area.
Finding Nemo-The Musical: Fantastic puppet/actor show in a large theater with parts of the show taking place in the audience area.
Primeval Whirl: A lot of spinning and sudden jerks on this coaster.
Dinosaur: Extremely loud, dark indoor ride through a prehistoric jungle. This ride is very rough and jarring. Loud screeching and flashing lights during parts of the ride. The last part of the ride can be intense because the T-Rex roars loudly at your vehicle while chasing you.

Blizzard Beach Rides and Attractions

Picture
Blizzard Beach
Disney's printable interactive park maps
Blizzard Beach's attraction descriptions.

Blizzard Beach has more intense water rides and fewer family attractions than Typhoon Lagoon. Note: For the larger, more intense slides, please make sure your special needs family member will be able to keep their arms crossed at all times and lie on their back. They must understand not to sit up even when water gushes in their face.

Chairlift:  This attraction is like a ski lift which requires the rider to get on the lift car while the lift is moving. A bar drops down over your head and you will need to sit still. Not recommended for persons afraid of heights. If you cannot ride the chairlift, you can walk the stairs to the attractions at the top of Mount Gushmore.
Downhill Double Dipper: You have to pick up your tube when you get in line for this ride. During the ride, a cow bell clanks which may bother some guests. The line tends to move slowly.
Runoff Rapids: Riders carry their tube from the bottom to the top of a hill to the ride entrance (about 200 steps). Two-person tube riders choose the left or right slide.  One-person tube rider goes down the middle slide which is enclosed and can be dark.
Ski Patrol Training Camp:  Maximum height posted for this attraction; designed for younger kids.
Slush Gusher:  Water slide.
Summit Plummet: Intense water slide. Must be able to hold arms and feet appropriately as instructed.  As you go down the hill, water will hit your face and may go up your nose. You may hit speeds of 50mph going down this slide.
Teamboat Springs:  Family raft ride. The tube is on a moving platform. You will have to be able to step onto the platform and then into the tube while it is moving. Let the cast member know if you need assistance. They can stop the moving belt if more time is needed to get into the raft.
Toboggan Racers: You will ride down the slide on your stomach on a mat. Multiple riders can get in separate lines in order to race one another.

Typhoon Lagoon Rides and Attractions

This water park has more family and less intense attractions than Blizzard Beach. For the larger, more intense slides, please make sure your special needs family member will be able to keep their arms crossed at all times and understands not to sit up, even if water splashes in their face.

Surf Pool:  This wave pool emits a loud horn prior to the waves starting. The waves are stronger than you may think and may knock you off your feet and cause you to go under water for a brief time. On crowded days, you may bump into other people near you when the wave hits.

Shrek 4-D:  Each rider wears 3D glasses and will experience 4-D effects like being sprayed with water, and the seats will move roughly. Some scenes are scary and loud.
Despicable Me Minion Mayhem:  Based on the popular movie, the premise of this ride is the human audience will be turned into Minions but something goes wrong in the process. There are two holding rooms with entertaining videos explaining the 3D glasses and an introduction to the experience. In the second room, a loud bang with a puff of smoke that smells like bananas will occur. In the third room is the simulator ride. During the 3D movie and 4D experiences the bench seats (4 people to each bench) will move roughly and you will also get sprinkled with water. If you cannot tolerate simulator rides, when you enter the first room and before assigned to your row, you can ask to be put on the bench seats that do not move but you will still be able to enjoy the 3D movie and 4D effects.  After the simulator ride is over, there is a fun dance party with life-sized Minion characters as you exit into the gift shop.
Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit: Intensive roller coaster that plays loud music behind your head. This ride requires you to wear a harness that lowers down over your head. At times you will be on your back going straight up. This ride now accepts the Express Plus. You may still need to use the AAP. Your special needs family member cannot wear headphones during this ride.
Twister: Tornado simulator. Dark, very loud, simulated thunder and lightning, banging sounds. The floor will drop and shake during the simulated storm.
Revenge of the Mummy: The loading zone is loud due to the harnesses clanking as the riders are secured. This ride requires you to wear a harness that lowers down over your head. Portions of this ride are in the dark, very loud and could be scary to some. There are sudden stops and spins and turns (including riding backwards) and fire.
Disaster!: Select members of the audience participate in the making of a disaster movie. At the end, the entire audience boards a subway train and becomes part of the movie. Very loud banging, explosions with fire, rushing water, earthquake shaking and audience members screaming throughout this part of the movie making.
Beetlejuice’s Graveyard Revue: Entertaining loud musical show by monsters, zombies and vampires with some adult humor and sexual undertones. Some pyrotechnics are used in the show.
Men In Black: Loud, spinning dark ride where you shoot aliens. Some flashing lights.
The Simpsons Ride: Simulator ride where your car will move in many directions, at times replicating a roller coaster ride. Non-stop action and movement throughout the ride.
Terminator 2: 3-D: Riders wear 3D glasses. Loud movie contains many scenes with explosions, gunfire and loud motorcycles. Our sound sensitive son did not like this attraction.

This 3-D ride has a four person car and simulates riding a broom through scenes from the Harry Potter films. Parts of this ride are in the dark and at times actual animatronics try to attack you. Steam and water spray occur during the ride. If you tend to feel motion sickness, there is a greater chance of experiencing nausea on this ride. This ride requires you to wear a harness that lowers over your head. Your feet will dangle throughout this ride. Tip: Plus-sized persons have had difficulty fitting properly into the seat with the harness on this ride. If you are larger, try sitting in the outside seat on the left or right side of the vehicle. Taller people (not necessary plus-sized) may also have difficulty with the harness fitting properly. They should sit in the outside seats as well. The sample seat at the ride entrance may help determine if you can ride comfortably. If you decide not to do the ride portion of this attraction, you should still go through the queue line in order to experience all the Harry Potter items and scenes from the films. It is worth the walk and you should take your time to look at everything. When you get up to the ride portion, explain to the attendant that you are not riding and they will show you where to exit.
